I didn’t like it. It had an uninspired, lackluster feeling to it. All of the characters felt emotionally muted. There was decent character development with the leads, but the characters themselves weren’t likable.

It felt like it was based more on the procedural dramas (e.g. CSI, etc.) that were inspired by its source material than on the material itself.

The original Sherlock Holmes stories are a joy to read because they’re so inventive. The sequences of deductions Holmes goes through are so implausibly connected and yet so grounded in reality that we’re led to continuously suspend our disbelief and marvel at Holmes’ genius. The stories are suspenseful, exciting, entertaining and hold one’s interest.

The show lacks all of that fun. As we’re taken through Holmes’ deductions, the show listlessly connects the dots for us. It doesn’t do a good job of creating suspense or excitement. Holmes’ observations don’t seem particularly inspired, more matter-of-fact. It all just feels flat.

It has the same contrived feeling that you get when watching other detective TV shows. One never felt cheated after reading one of the original short stories, whereas with these types of TV shows it’s typical to feel that the story was dictated more by the necessity of expedient writing than by the careful craft present in good storytelling.

Like most TV it’s addictive but not really entertaining. It feels trivial, silly even. I wonder why the technorati lambast social games like Farmville when stuff like this is being pumped into millions of homes every evening.

Imagine you’re going to the biggest party in the universe. What do you want do when you arrive? Probably put away your coat, get a cocktail and some hors’d eourves, then find people you know and have a conversation with them. After that, you’d want to find out what the most interesting conversations in the party are and listen in on them. Everything else besides these conversations would be just background noise that you’d ignore.

So you’re at this party, and you’re having conversations with people you know, and you’re also listening in on the most interesting conversations other people are happening, and you’re ignoring everything else.

Twitter is like this really big party, except it’s happening all the time.
